Night and Day

It has been a week since my last blog. At that time, Aimee was suffering from intense pain from at least eight areas of her body. Today her pain is concentrated in only one area of her body, primarily her abdomen, the donor site of her muscle flap. Aimee’s other donor site, her right thigh from which the skin was taken to complete her skin graft, is healing rapidly and her pain in that area has subsided significantly. The area where she received the skin graft is healing well and the grafts are adhering as expected. Her progress from where she was a week ago is as night is to...

Happy Father’s Day!

Donna and I have just come from seeing Aimee this morning and I can report that over the past 48 hours, Aimee has had the most difficult pain she’s experienced through her entire ordeal.   Just to be clear: in my previous post I mentioned that Aimee refused pain medication during dressing changes. The surgery Aimee had on Friday is far more severe than any dressing change imaginable. Aimee is now taking pain medication in as liberal a dose as can be prescribed. If she even dared to refuse taking it, which she wouldn’t, then the doctors would most certainly administer it in an...

Day 42

It’s been a very busy week for Aimee and the Copeland family. On Monday Aimee had her first successful skin graft. The area of her wound, which I saw for the first time on Sunday during a dressing change, is massive. Aimee has been looking at the wound area for quite some time now, so she shelved her modesty and encouraged me to examine it. I didn’t fully examine the wound the way a doctor would, rather,  I respected Aimee’s dignity and examined it the way a father would. Aimee is actually very proud of the progress she has made toward the healing of the wound and she...

Last night Donna and I slept for eight hours for the first time in a month. In fact, Donna and I woke up at exactly the same time, exchanged loving smiles, we kissed and wished each other a happy anniversary. Twenty-nine years ago on this day, we were married at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Spartanburg, S.C.   Had it not been for that monumental day, we would not be here in Augusta at Doctors Hospital, because Aimee never would have been born. Had our marriage never happened, I am convinced that today my life would be a filled with loneliness and misery. Donna was an answer to my prayers...

Aimee Day – May 27, 2012

Sunday morning was an incredibly beautiful day. The sky was filled with a hazy sunshine and a nice steady breeze gently massaged the clouds that dotted the horizon. The day had a special feel to it, but I felt that way because it was Memorial Day weekend, a time to honor our fallen heroes.   I told Donna and Paige to enjoy the first visit with Aimee while I visited Warren Baptist Church in Augusta. It felt strange not traveling with them for the first visit as I have done nearly every day since Aimee arrived in Augusta. I felt that at least one member of our family needed to be in a...
